‘On the Shoulders of Tiny Giants’
Note from the Artist: Picasso once said that it took him four years to paint like Raphael but a lifetime to learn to paint like a child. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, especially after spending nearly a month on one very realistic and detailed painting. I wanted to explore this visually, and so I tried to create a painting that captured the creative journey from wild and expressive childlike doodles to figurative realism and back again. Oh, and I painted everything beneath the tear with my left hand in an attempt to capture what it might look like if 6 year old me was given a pencil (also I just really wanted to try painting with my left hand). Anyhow, this was a really fun experiment and I definitely encourage you all to let your mind wander and draw stuff that doesn’t look like anything in particular – left or right handed…

I find discarded prints and paintings (ones you may have inherited from great grandma and brought to your local donation bin), and make additions. I use oil paints and do my best to match the style of the original artist. My hope is to take these out of the trash can and into a good home; full-circle- from a print that proudly hung on your Grandma’s wall, to a painting that proudly hangs on yours.
